History of the School

St. Michael's G.N.S. was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1954. The original school known as 'The Old Building' is located off St. Mary's Road. The building known as 'The Junior Block' was added in the later 60's and 'The Extension' was built in 1978. The principals of St. Michael's had always been Sisters of Mercy until 1995, when Mrs. Aine Birmingham was appointed as the first lay principal.

At present the school has 14 mainstream teachers, one special class teacher, two learning support and one language support teacher for non native pupils. The teaching staff are supported by a full time secretary, caretaker and special needs assisstant.
